Parker Pens

History

Parker Pen was founded in 1888 by George Safford Parker in the United States of America. Parker manufactures luxury writing pens. George Parker was not a novice to the writing equipment industry. He had previously worked for John Holland Gold Pen Company as a sales agent. In 1889 Parker received a patent for his first fountain pen. However it was not until 1899 when Parker manufactured the first successful pen called the Parker Jointless.

Parker Pen Collection

In 1894 Parker created the Lucky Curve fountain pen (later to be successful as the Parker Jointless). The pen drew back the excess ink into the barrel of the pen when the pen was not in use. The Lucky Curve was altered over time and was in production until 1928.

1931 and Parker Pen’s were a popular choice of pen. They created the Quink pen which was a quick drying pen to eradicate the need for blotting.

The most popular fountain pen for Parker was the 51 developed in 1941. It was a streamline casing for the pen, was stronger and so did not easily break and had less leaks with the ink.

The invention of the ball point pen did not mean the end for Parker Pens they moved with the times. In 1954 they produced the Parker Jotter. The pen had a nylon body and and clip in the shape of inverted V.

Parker did make other pens such as the Duofold and Vector etc.

Parker Pen’s In The Present Day

Currently Parker is not a stand alone company. Parker Pen is owned by Newell Brands and Polyhedron Holdings. When Parker Pen’s were first created one of the main forms of communication was by writing letters. This could be personal to family, friends or a loved one. Writing to companies for work purposes or to pay bills etc. Now we have computers and computer systems to enable communication, writing letters is in decline. However some people still enjoy the art of letter writing and Parker Pens are still in demand as a gift for special occasions. They can be bought in beautiful presentation cases. This does not mean the antique and vintage Parker pens are worthy of the bin. These are very collectable and look great as a Parker pen collection or as park of collectable writing equipment.
