What Is Wedgwood?
Wedgwood is a fine china and porcelain company founded in May 1759 by potter Josiah Wedgwood. The company makes luxury pottery and are extremely popular worldwide. They quickly grew to become one of the largest companies of Staffordshire Pottery. Wedgwood in more recent times made stoneware and earthenware which was more affordable to manufacture.
Wedgwood Products
Wedgwood had 2 main types of product:
1775 Jasperware – This is unglazed stoneware that is commonly blue and white. Tradition methods of pottery making and decoration was used for this range. The more expensive Jasperware is black and white. These products were made in various forms from vases and tableware to trinket dishes and boxes.
1765 Creamware- This is a luxury glazed earthenware product. Mainly made for tableware by way of coffee, tea and dinner sets. The items had printed designs on made by transferring monochrome paint from copper or steal plates on to the pottery.
Wedgwood Inspiring Artists
Wedgwood worked with various artists over the years to keep that unique edge on the pottery industry. Here is some of those talented people:
William Hackwood – started working for Wedgwood when he was just 13 years old in 1769. This is where he mastered the craft and became the main modeller finishing and modelling products. He later went on to make his own sculptures.
Giuseppe Ceracchi – an artist in own right famous for his bust sculptors of prominent British and American people. He worked with Wedgwood in 1773 for a number of years.
Jasper Conran – Lets fast forward to a more modern artist who is well known. Conran is an established designer from women’s ware, homeware and even productions within the preforming arts. He designed for Wedgwood in 2001 and created some wonderful, collectable items.
