A Brief History Of The Vacuum Flask

The story of the invention of the vacuum flask starts in 1892 with a Scottish scientist by the name of Sir James Dewar. Working in cryogenics he turned his attention to the possibility of keeping a liquid in a flask at a stable temperature. How did he do this? A glass bottle was placed inside another glass bottle removing the air between these 2 bottles. This was the first step in the invention of the vacuum flask. Dewar hired a professional glass blower to create a more suitable glass vessel, by 1889 the Dewar flask was invented.

Thermos – The Company

Reinhold Burger a professional glass blower with his business partner Albert Aschenbrenner, manufactured the glass flasks for Sir James Dewar. In 1903 Burger and Aschenbrenner created a new vacuum flask made from metal for the protective casing and registered the patent for this. In 1904 the new metal vacuum flask required a name. Following a competition held by the men, a local resident came forward with the word Thermos (meaning heat in Greek). Two years later in 1906 Burger had met in Berlin with William B Walker a business man from America. Walker promoted the marketing of this product in America if Burger could agree to the legalities for this product. Only one year later in 1907 and the first Thermos plant in Brooklyn New York was ready for manufacturing of the Thermos flask.
